Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancún sit on the same stretch of coast and solve completely different weddings. Cancún has the large resorts and the flight connections: it''s the easiest for lists over 150 people arriving from several countries. Tulum has the most sought-after aesthetic and also the most expensive, most fragile logistics. Playa del Carmen sits in between, which is why it works for most couples: real beach, a walkable town, hotels across price ranges, and an airport under an hour away.

If you''re deciding between the three, the question isn''t which is prettiest. It''s how many guests you''re bringing, where they''re flying from, and how much logistics you''re willing to take on.

What''s the real difference between Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancún?

The difference isn''t the sea — it''s the infrastructure around it.

Cancún is the lowest-friction option. Resorts have in-house coordinators, closed packages and capacity for large groups. In exchange, your wedding resembles other weddings at the same resort, and you''re almost always required to use their vendors.

Playa del Carmen is the middle ground, which is why most weddings land here. You get beach, you get a town — your guests can walk out to dinner instead of staying locked inside a resort — and hotels in several sizes. Tulum is the most photographed and the most expensive per guest. How much does it cost to marry in Playa del Carmen?

The range moves mainly on two decisions: whether you marry at a hotel with a closed package or build everything from scratch, and how many vendors you bring in from out of state.

Hotel packages usually include space, catering, basic setup and coordination, and their real advantage isn''t price — it''s that they reduce the number of contracts you administer remotely. Building from scratch on a private beach or beach club gives you total control over style, but it means separately hiring furniture, lighting, power, event restrooms and staff.

Three things that raise the number more than people expect:

1. External vendor fees. Many hotels charge you to bring in a photographer or planner who isn''t theirs, and others prohibit it outright. It''s the first question to ask, before you hold the date.
2. The surrounding days. Welcome party, next-day brunch and transfers. A destination wedding isn''t one event, it''s three — and budgeting only for Saturday is the most expensive mistake there is.
3. Bringing a team from another city. Flights, lodging and per diems for the whole team, not one person. Local vendors know the humidity, the wind and how long setup takes in sand; outsiders find out that day.

When is the best time to marry in the Riviera Maya?

December through April is the dry season and also the most contested: beachfront venues with large capacity book 12 to 18 months out.

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. That doesn''t mean you can''t marry in those months — it means you need a covered plan B contracted from the outset and a written cancellation policy from the venue and every vendor. Deciding it early costs a fraction of improvising it the week before.

There''s one factor almost nobody accounts for when picking a date: sargassum. Its presence varies year to year and by stretch of coast, and it can''t be predicted months ahead. If a photo on the sand is non-negotiable for you, ask the hotel what cleaning protocol they have and get it in writing.

Do hotels require me to use their vendors?

Frequently yes, or they charge a fee for external vendors. It''s the question that goes before holding the date, not after. If you already have a photographer or planner you trust, confirm in writing that you can bring them and what it costs. Closed hotel packages tend to be cheaper precisely because the vendor is theirs.

What about the sargassum?

It varies year to year and by stretch of coast, and nobody can predict it months ahead. What you can do is ask the hotel what cleaning protocol they have, how often they apply it, and what alternative they offer if the beach isn''t in shape on your day. Get it in writing. Many venues have an alternate space with a sea view that solves the ceremony without sand.

How far ahead should I book?

Between 12 and 18 months if your date falls between December and April, the dry and most contested season. Beachfront venues with large capacity go first. Outside that window you have more room, but you need the rain plan B settled in the contract.

Do my guests need to rent a car?

In Playa del Carmen, not necessarily: the town is walkable and there are taxis. In Tulum, almost always yes, or contracted transport. In Cancún it depends on whether they stay in the hotel zone. What is worth covering in all three cases are the wedding-day transfers, so nobody drives back at dawn along the highway.

Can I marry legally there or only hold a symbolic ceremony?

Both options exist. Many couples handle the civil registry in their home city and hold the symbolic ceremony on the beach: it''s simpler and avoids paperwork at a distance.
