Cashback for Weddings: How It Works and How Much You Can Save
Cashback for Weddings: How It Works and How Much You Can Save
Cashback has existed for years in credit cards and online shopping, but applying it to destination weddings is entirely new. The concept is straightforward: if your guests are going to spend on your wedding anyway—accommodation, transfers, experiences—a portion of that spending returns to you as a couple. It is not a discount for the guest, not an extra commission for the vendor—it is an automated reimbursement mechanism that transforms your wedding into an economic asset.
This guide explains how it works, how much you can realistically save, and why the traditional wedding model is mathematically disadvantageous for the couple.
The Problem Cashback Solves
In a typical 150-guest destination wedding in San Miguel de Allende:
- Guests spend on hotels (~$15,000 MXN each, 3 nights average)
- Airport transfers ($2,800 MXN per person)
- Weekend experiences ($3,000 MXN per person in tours, dining, spa)
Total aggregate guest spending: approximately $3 million MXN
From that spending, vendors keep full margins, traditional platforms like Booking or Expedia take 15-25% commission, and the couple receives absolutely nothing—despite being the ones who generated all that traffic.
Katible redefines this. From each reservation made with your wedding code:
- 70% goes to the vendor (as always)
- 7% goes to Katible (platform commission)
- 3% goes to you as cashback
- VAT and Stripe fees are calculated separately
On the $3M aggregate guest spending, you receive $90,000 MXN in automatic cashback—without your guests paying a single peso more.
How It Works Technically
Step 1: You Register (Free)
Upon registering as a bride on Katible, a unique WeddingCode is automatically generated, such as KB-4GT9-82XZ. This code identifies all reservations associated with your wedding.
Step 2: You Share Your Code
- Via WhatsApp to guest groups
- On your digital invitation
- On your wedding website
- By email
- Printed on physical invitations (code + QR)
Step 3: Your Guests Reserve With Your Code
When a guest visits your wedding page (katible.com/codigo/KB-4GT9-82XZ), they see a curated catalog of hotels, transfers, and experiences in your wedding city. They book with your code applied automatically.
Step 4: Cashback Accumulates in Real Time
Every completed reservation adds to your cashback balance. You can see on your dashboard in real time:
- Who booked what
- How much has accumulated
- How much you could earn if X% more guests booked
Step 5: Cashback Withdrawal
Once you reach the minimum threshold ($5,000 MXN), you can transfer accumulated cashback to your bank account. Or apply it as credit for purchases within the platform (experience checkout, services, etc.).
How Much Cashback a Typical Wedding Generates
It depends on how many guests use your code. Conservative models:
Conservative Scenario: 40% of Guests Use Your Code
- 60 of 150 guests book hotel + transfer + 1 experience
- Average spending per guest: $18,000 MXN
- Total spending generated: $1,080,000 MXN
- Your cashback (3%): $32,400 MXN
Mid-Range Scenario: 60% of Guests Use Your Code
- 90 of 150 guests book hotel + transfer + 1 experience
- Total spending generated: $1,620,000 MXN
- Your cashback: $48,600 MXN
High Scenario: 80% (typical if you promote well)
- 120 of 150 guests book
- Total spending generated: $2,160,000 MXN
- Your cashback: $64,800 MXN
With this cashback you can cover: your wedding dress, your honeymoon, your wedding flowers, or six months rent on your first apartment as a married couple.
Why the No-Cashback Model Is Unfair
With traditional platforms:
- Booking charges 15% per reservation (goes to Booking)
- Expedia charges 18-25% (goes to Expedia)
- OTAs pay 3% to Google for advertising traffic
No one compensates the bride who brought the guests. Mathematically it is:
- You generate the traffic (your wedding attracted 150 people who spent $3M)
- Someone else captures all the economic value of that traffic
- You pay for your wedding out of pocket
Cashback simply redistributes a portion of the value to the traffic creator—which is you.
Difference from Bride Discounts
Some platforms offer a 10% discount if you use their code when booking. That is DIFFERENT from cashback:
- Discount: the benefit goes to the guest (pays less)
- Cashback: the benefit goes to you (accumulates money)
Both are valid, but cashback is more transparent and does not depend on your guest wanting to use a code for their own convenience. With cashback, every reservation counts regardless.
Restrictions and Fine Print (No Hidden Catches)
WHAT APPLIES for cashback:
- Completed reservations (not cancelled)
- Made with your WeddingCode before or during the wedding
- Hotels, transfers, experiences, spa, tours, restaurants (host categories)
WHAT DOES NOT APPLY:
- Fraudulent reservations (someone booking multiple accounts to inflate cashback)
- Partial cancellations
- Services booked directly with the vendor (venues, catering, etc.)—those are on the couple's side, not the guests'
- Reservations made more than 30 days after the wedding
Technical limit: there is no cashback ceiling. If your wedding is 500 guests generating $500K cashback, it is yours.
Why Vendors Participate
The model benefits everyone:
- Hotel vendors: they get a group of 20-80 guests who would otherwise scatter across random Airbnbs. Guaranteed volume in exchange for platform commission.
- Experiences/tours: they sell fixed packages with advance payment, not dependent on walk-in sales.
- Transfers: they receive concentrated bookings on specific dates, optimizing routes.
For them, paying 10% commission to Katible versus paying 20% to Booking plus their own marketing, they come out ahead.
Comparison With Other Wedding Savings Methods
Credit Card With Cashback:
- Benefit: 1-2% cashback on your personal spending
- On $1.5M MXN wedding: $15K-$30K MXN cashback
- On your own spending, not guests'
Retail Gift Registry:
- Guests gift you retail products
- Retailer gives you 5-8% extra credit (thank you credit)
- On $200K in gifts: $10K-$16K extra credit
Katible With Cashback:
- On guest spending (much larger volume)
- On 150-guest wedding: $30K-$65K MXN automatic
- You can combine with the two above (they do not exclude each other)
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to ask guests to give me something in exchange for cashback? No. Cashback is generated automatically from reservations your guests would make anyway (hotel, transfer, experiences for their trip). You ask for nothing extra.
Do guests pay more when booking with my code? No. The price is exactly the same as booking direct. The code simply identifies that the reservation is associated with your wedding.
When do I receive the money? After the service is rendered (hotel checkout, tour completed). Katible holds the payment for 48 hours for chargeback protection, then releases the cashback to your account.
Is cashback taxable? In Mexico, cashback on personal services is not taxable income for the bride (equivalent to partial refund). When you withdraw to your personal account, it is like any transfer. Consult your accountant for your specific situation.
Can I use cashback outside Katible? Yes, when you transfer to your bank account you can use it however you wish. Or apply it as credit within the platform for future purchases.
What happens if I cancel my wedding? Accumulated cashback is held for 30 days in case reservations are cancelled. After that it is released. If all reservations are cancelled, cashback is also cancelled (since no service was rendered).
If I am a groom, do I also get cashback? Yes. The account belongs to the couple, not specifically to the bride. Either of you can withdraw.
