Your wedding photo session doesn't have to happen on your wedding day
"Does it include a session?" is the question everyone asks the photographer, and almost nobody says which one. Engagement, save the date, couple portraits, first look, trash the dress: they are five different things, they happen on different days and they are quoted differently. If you don't say which one you want, the photographer quotes the one they have in mind, and the surprise shows up in the invoice or in the gallery.
The short answer
A wedding can have up to five photo sessions: engagement (pre-wedding), save the date, couple portraits on the day, first look, and post-wedding or trash the dress. Only the couple portraits and the first look happen on the wedding day; the others are scheduled separately and some already come in the package. Before you hire, ask which ones are included, how long each lasts and who pays for location permits.
The five sessions, without the magazine glossary
| Session | When | What it's for | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engagement (pre-wedding) | Weeks or months before the wedding | Photos for the save the date, the invitation or the reception screen, and getting used to your photographer's camera | Is it included? How many hours and locations? How many edited photos, delivered when? |
| Save the date | Before sending invitations | One image to announce the date; often taken from the engagement session | Is it a separate session or a selection from the engagement shoot? Do they deliver only photos or the design too? |
| Couple portraits | On the wedding day, between ceremony and reception or in the late-afternoon light | The couple portraits that go in the album | How much time in the schedule does it need, and at what time? |
| First look | On the wedding day, before the ceremony | Seeing each other first, in private, and getting portraits done early so you don't miss cocktail hour | Where, with how much privacy and for how long? |
| Post-wedding or trash the dress | Days or weeks after, wearing the dress | Photos with no clock, sometimes in water, sand or mud | Is the dress yours or rented? What happens if it gets damaged? |
A boudoir session is the sixth one, optional and private. If you are interested, ask how privacy, storage and photo delivery are handled before talking about locations.
What photographers registered on Katiblé offer
As of October 19, 2026, Katiblé has 69 active wedding photographers. Not all completed their profile; the counts are over those who answered each question, and they are self-reported.
- Engagement session: 35 of the 69 checked that their package includes a pre-wedding session. Of the 37 who answered that question, only 2 said no.
- Services (48 answered): 43 do video, 38 drone, 34 trash the dress, 31 second photographer, 13 boudoir session and 10 Same Day Edit, the video screened at the party itself.
- Deliverables (47 answered): all 47 deliver high-resolution digital files, 34 an online gallery, 23 a printed album and 20 a USB drive.
What this tells you: on Katiblé the engagement session is no exotic extra, since 35 of the 37 who answered include it. If your photographer includes it and you don't use it, you are leaving money on the table; if they don't, it is the first thing worth negotiating, before the album.
Where to do it and what permit the location needs
Archaeological site, museum or monument. Mexico's Federal Duties Law charges a daily fee for commercial photography at archaeological sites, museums or monuments under the custody of the competent institutes: 7,957.68 pesos per day in 2026 (article 288-D; fee updated in Annex 4 of the 2026 Miscellaneous Tax Resolution, published in the Official Gazette on December 28, 2025, and rounded to 7,958 when paid). At museums and venues of the Ministry of Culture the 2026 fee is 7,657.11 pesos per day (article 288-D-1, which still names the former National Council for Culture and the Arts). Whether your session counts as commercial photography, and which authorization it needs, is decided by the institution that holds custody of the site; at an archaeological site, that is INAH. Check with INAH before booking: its online procedures portal could not be consulted on October 19, 2026, so we do not tell you here which procedure applies. If it turns out to be commercial, that cost belongs to you or to your photographer, and it has to be in the quote.
Beach. The beach is for common use (General Law of National Assets, article 8), so posing on the sand is not the same as setting something up on it. If the session involves a structure, furniture or a setup in the federal zone, that is a different permit conversation. And if the beach is inside a protected natural area, ask about that area's rules before arriving with equipment.
Hotel, garden or private property. You need the owner's permission. Ask whether they charge per session and at what times they let you in.
Drone. Drones are governed by the standard NOM-107-SCT3-2019 (Official Gazette, November 14, 2019) and overseen by Mexico's Federal Civil Aviation Agency. Ask your photographer whether their operation complies and whether the location allows it.
Light. Time of day matters as much as location. If your wedding faces the sea, see how to build a light schedule for wedding photography in Los Cabos: the reasoning works for any coast.
How much does a wedding photo session cost
We don't have a stand-alone session price with a sample worth publishing, and we won't make one up. What we do have is the starting point of the full package: among 23 photographers on Katiblé with a declared price, across 19 cities, the median starting price is 14,500 pesos and half start between 10,950 and 21,000 pesos (as of October 19, 2026). That is the price of the most basic coverage, not of a session.
So the useful question is not "how much is the session" but "am I already paying for it?". On Katiblé, half of the active photographers (35 of 69) mark the engagement session as included. What is almost never included is the location cost: an archaeological site fee, a venue entrance or a garden rental.
Verdict
The engagement session is the one that pays off most: it ends up in the save the date, the invitation and on the reception screen, and it trains you for the day. If your photographer includes it, use it. If not, negotiate it before the album. The others are a matter of taste; this one is a budget decision.
Next step
Before signing, send these five questions to your photographer in writing:
- Which sessions does the package include: engagement, save the date, couple portraits, first look, post-wedding?
- How many hours and how many locations does each one have?
- How many edited photos per session, and delivered when?
- Who applies and pays for location permits?
- What happens if it rains or the location cancels?
