How much a mariachi costs in Mexico: what PROFECO measured and what drives the price

November 3, 2026

Ask "how much does a mariachi cost?" and you get a round number nobody can trace. There is no official price list: each group sets its own rate. The closest thing to public data is a survey by Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) of 164 music groups in seven states. Here is what it found, what year it is from, and what to ask so your wedding quote holds no surprises.

How to read this guide. The main source is PROFECO's study "Costs of mariachis, norteños and bands, 2022": a phone survey carried out from August 15 to September 1, 2022 among groups listed in Mexico's National Statistical Directory of Economic Units, with prices for September 15 and September 30. These are 2022 prices for the Independence Day holidays, not wedding prices and not 2026 prices. We use them because they are the only ones with a public method. Everything was checked on October 19, 2026. Prices are in Mexican pesos.

The short answer

  • Per hour, the average price PROFECO measured for September 15, 2022 ranged from 2,592 pesos in Puebla to 5,364 in Sinaloa. In Mexico City it was 4,662.50.
  • An extra song cost on average from 262.50 pesos in Mexico City to 440 in Sinaloa, on that same date.
  • A serenade ranged from 1,868 pesos in Puebla to 4,400 in Sinaloa.
  • There is no official price list. What moves the price: the date, the number of musicians, the state, the group's reputation and whether you hire through an agency.
  • For your wedding, ask for the price per hour, how many musicians come, whether travel is included, and get it in writing.

Source: PROFECO, Survey Department, "Costos de mariachis, norteños y bandas, 2022", published in October 2022. The study does not cover other states. If your wedding is elsewhere, use this table as an order of magnitude, not as a price.

What drives the price

The date. In five of the seven states, an hour on September 30 came out cheaper than on September 15: 31% less in Mexico City, 23.5% less in Puebla, 17.6% less in Nuevo León. In Guanajuato it came out 28.3% more expensive, and in Jalisco it stayed almost the same. September 15 is one of the highest-demand dates of the year. If your wedding falls on a date like that, or on a peak-season Saturday, ask whether the price changes.

The group. The averages hide a lot of spread. Among the groups PROFECO surveyed, an hour in Mexico City ranged from 2,200 to 19,000 pesos; in Puebla, from 900 to 6,000; and in Nuevo León, from 1,600 to 8,000. The same study cites an article in the UNAM Gazette: the price "varies according to the group's fame and the number of members".

How many musicians come. In the study, the mariachi groups had between 2 and 13 members. Two quotes with the same price are not comparable if one is for five musicians and the other for nine. Ask for the exact number and which instruments.

Who is charging you. Excélsior warned on June 20, 2025 that if you hire through an agency or a representative, they "could charge you a commission" that raises the price. Ask whether you are dealing with the group or an intermediary.

The hours. Only 9.5% of the groups said they offered promotions, and the most common was a discount on the second or third hour. If you are hiring more than one hour, ask.

What the study says about contracts, guarantees and payment

This is the part almost nobody reads, and the one that protects you most. Among the mariachis who answered:

QuestionAnswer
Do they give a contract?68.0% yes; 17.2% only a receipt; 13.8% nothing; 1.0% don't know
If they cannot show up, what happens?40.4% don't know; 18.2% refund the money; 9.9% send another group
What outfit do they wear?68.5% standard; 31.0% formal (de gala); 0.5% no outfit

And across all groups in the study (mariachis, norteños and bands), 98.9% accept cash, 53.0% bank transfer and only 4.2% credit card.

For your wedding, that means: one in three mariachis gives you no contract, and four in ten do not know what happens if they cannot make it. That is the risk you have to close in writing. Before you transfer anything, check what the contract should say before you pay the deposit.

The mariachi at your wedding: three questions before you get quotes

  1. For which moment do you want them? For the Mass, for your arrival at the reception or for a set during the party. Each one changes how many hours you pay and whether you need travel between two places.
  2. Are they allowed there? If you want them at Mass, ask your parish what music it allows: each parish decides. If it is at the venue, ask whether there are hours for live music or a fee for outside vendors.
  3. Which repertoire and which outfit? If you want specific songs, send them in writing. If you want the formal outfit, ask for it: in the study, only 31% of mariachis wear it.

How to compare three quotes

Ask for all three under the same conditions and fill in this table:

ItemQuote 1Quote 2Quote 3
Price per hour and minimum hours
Number of musicians and instruments
Outfit (standard or formal)
Travel or expenses included
Price of an extra hour or song
Contract or receipt only
What happens if they cannot show up
Deposit and payment method

The lowest quote is not always the cheapest: a five-piece group with no contract is not the same as an eight-piece group with a contract and a guaranteed replacement.

Where to look

On Katiblé, every mariachi with a profile is listed on mariachis for weddings in Mexico, grouped by city. If your wedding is in Guadalajara or Toluca, you can also see the city's music page, where they appear alongside DJs and bands: wedding music in Guadalajara and wedding music in Toluca. These pages are in Spanish.

If you are planning all of the wedding's music, not only the mariachi, start with how to choose between a DJ, mariachi and banda.

What we cannot tell you

There is no publicly sourced price for a wedding mariachi in 2026. PROFECO's study is from 2022 and covers the Independence Day holidays. On Katiblé, only two registered mariachis have declared a price, without saying whether it is per hour or per event: too few to publish an average, so we do not. Use the table as a reference and the written quote as the price.

Verdict

A mariachi's price is not a mystery, but it is not a fixed number either. The only public study, PROFECO's 2022 survey, found that an hour cost on average between 2,592.30 pesos (Puebla) and 5,364.30 (Sinaloa) for September 15, and that by September 30 the average had dropped in five of the seven states. What really changes your risk is not the price: it is whether you get a contract and what happens if they do not show up.

Next step

Write to three groups today with the same question: "How much do you charge per hour for a wedding on [date], at [place], how many musicians come, in which outfit, is travel included, do you give a contract and what happens if you cannot make it?" With those three answers in the table, you can choose.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a mariachi charge for one hour?

According to PROFECO's 2022 survey, the average per hour for September 15 ranged from 2,592.30 pesos in Puebla to 5,364.30 in Sinaloa, and in Mexico City it was 4,662.50. These are 2022 Independence Day prices: your quote may differ.

How much does an extra mariachi song cost?

In the same study, an extra song cost on average from 191.70 pesos (Puebla, September 30) to 440 (Sinaloa, September 15). In Mexico City, 262.50 and 225 pesos depending on the date.

How much does a serenade cost?

PROFECO measured from 1,788.50 pesos (Puebla, September 30) to 4,400 (Sinaloa, September 15). The study does not say how many songs a serenade includes: ask when you get a quote.

Is there an official price list for mariachis?

No. No authority sets the price of a mariachi: each group sets its own. PROFECO's 2022 survey is a reference of observed prices, not a mandatory rate.

How much does half an hour of mariachi cost?

PROFECO's study measured prices per hour, per serenade and per extra song, not per half hour. If you only want them for one moment of the wedding, ask for the serenade price or for a number of songs and compare it with the hourly price.

How many musicians are in a mariachi?

In the study, the mariachi groups surveyed had between 2 and 13 members, and the number changes the price. Ask how many will come to your wedding and which instruments.

Do mariachis give a contract?

In PROFECO's study, 68% said yes, 17.2% only give a receipt and 13.8% give nothing. For a wedding, ask for a contract with the date, schedule, number of musicians and what happens if they cannot make it.

Can I pay a mariachi by card?

Few accept it. In the study, 98.9% of groups accepted cash, 53% bank transfer and only 4.2% credit card. If you pay a deposit by transfer, ask for a receipt.
